About Us

Why choose us

We are a small team of professionals with many years of experience in the management of volunteering interventions to uplift local communities. As full-time residential members of the Kerala community we are able to hand-pick the projects that will benefit both participants and volunteers utmost.

Our unique concept starts with the real needs of local groups and works to maximise the contribution of our volunteers through thoughtful intervensions and often bespoke development of project content. That way, we can assure you that your volunteering journey will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life – and the lives of your new Kerala friends.

Volunteering YOUR power

While the main focus of our projects is on meeting the needs of the communities we serve, we have tailored our programmes to employ the specific skills and engage the interests of our volunteers as well. Choose from projects that work to uplift the lives of women trapped in poverty and dead end jobs, provide hope and education to children in disadvantaged areas, share medical knowledge and experience with local healthcare professionals, bring joy and new experiences to kids dealing with disabilities, or help build new facilities for community use. Bring your skills in teaching, motivating, inspiring, healing and building – we can use them all!

Our Founder: Geetha Raj

Over the years, I have had the honour of working with people from all different backgrounds - women and children in and around Kerala, as well as incredible individuals from all around the world. What I have learnt is ‘being loved and cared’ is the first priority in my life. For this you need to give love and care for others!!

Initiated‘Thanal Foundation’, a public charitable organization which mainly aims women empowerment and education to poor children. I believe that every human being, no matter their background, deserves a fulfilling and dignified life. It is my mission and I hope to achieve this through ‘Thanal Foundation’. I work in particular with international volunteers. Their passion has had a huge impact on my work satisfaction and happiness. Working with volunteers is exciting and is a very satisfying way to extend the care to those in my local community who are in need. Thus Volunteer Time India was engendered as its first project.

Met and happened to interact with a lot of international volunteers. Among them a few were the best human beings I have ever met in my whole life --Made so much impact in my life - realized that it's the life I have dreamed and will be most happy in this life. It's a life of happiness, satisfaction and being loved by the people around me and internationally.

Started my career as a journalist in a newspaper and later worked for different magazines. In this time, I learnt about the resilience of the human spirit, but also of the deep inequalities and injustices that pervade our society, and the communities which I myself grew up in. Always sought a way to have a deeper impact; and fortunately later got the chance to shift into social services career which has been one of the greatest decisions of my life. Ever since, I have been involved in organising, facilitating and building networks which support local communities in need.

I currently live with my husband, Rajan in Cochin, Kerala. He is a man of discipline and integrity who stands behind good endeavours and community projects. He runs his own tours and travels company and is the backbone of ‘Thanal Foundation’. We have a lovely daughter who works as an architect in the UK and values for friendships and love for the community and is the real strength behind my new endeavours.

My father was a man of principles who always emphasised the importance of being socially responsible. My mother knew nothing other than giving love and affection, but still managed to look after the three children with her own income after the loss of our father at an early age and set the best example of women empowerment. I was fortunate to grow up with two older brothers who were like friends. They paved the way for a tiny girl to grow into someone who understood the importance of personal empowerment. Life long inspiration came from the maternal grand mother who was a teacher and was a self empowered lady who always had a role in the moulding of the little grand daughter. Care for others has always been part of how my family lives their lives.

“You may not have saved a lot of money in your life, but if you have saved a lot of heartaches for other folks, you are a pretty rich man.”
